You’re Doing it Wrong: Parking, Mounting & Dismounting (Bike Basics Ep.1)

In the first episode of my new series, Bike Basics 101, I teach you my time tested methods of mounting, dismounting, parking, and moving your bike around. Where should you park, and how? How can you get on and off without struggling or tipping the bike over? How do you push your bike around the garage or parking lot? What about hills, uneven terrain, short rider challenges, and balance?

Tips for short riders, new riders, but also experienced riders.

I keep a short length (about 25cm) of double sided velcro wrapped around the handlebar that I use to ‘clamp’ the front brake on in really dodgy parking situations (front downhill).
Works a treat and provides an extra option when needed.

Are those all your motorcycles? Greetings from Croatia. 🙂🇭🇷

Please try to keep the video as short as possible. Excessive talking makes the experience of seeing your video extremely painful and pathetic

nice, but HUFF, PUFF, for a young man you are not fit are you

I’ve been practicing mounting/ dismounting from the opposite side to side stand, this should put less strain on the sidestand and mounting. Something I read somewhere regarding parking is to try and park along the fall line….where a ball would roll.

  6. Tim Phillips on March 18, 2023 at 5:58 am

Thanks for the advice, it may work for some but I’ll continue mounting the bike in the conventional way. I don’t like the idea of putting extra weight onto the side stand and if throwing a leg over is too much of a struggle, perhaps that’s a sign.

Great messages, especially the cowboy mount. 69yo rider on CRF250L which is a high leg swing. I had a recent incident on mounting where my left shoe slipped off the footpeg bringing my opposite shin straight down on the other footpeg. Fault was the footwear quality as it’s worn tread too easily slipped of the footpeg. I have learnt that good footwear is a must, every time.

I have to say I’m amazed this has so many views. Not because you didn’t do a good job, but because I learned all of this in a motorcycle safety course. What this tells me is that more people need to take those classes, because that means they’re probably also youtubing how to ride.

Great insight to balance and mounting… Thank you so much… I was afraid I may have to sell my RT due to bad knees… this opens a new way of getting on…

  15. Captain America on March 18, 2023 at 6:07 am

It’s prolly not a bad idea to park in gear, but as long as the bike is facing slightly uphill, like towards your garage, on the driveway, you should be ok. But never park facing even slightly downhill! I learned that the hard way.

  16. Joseph Leister on March 18, 2023 at 6:08 am

    Excellent video…helped me a lot….thank you

  17. C.Saunders on March 18, 2023 at 6:09 am

I would never mount on opposite stand period.

  18. Wendy Gerrish on March 18, 2023 at 6:10 am

Now the bike I am using didn’t come with a foot stand which I’ve been in the habit of using for >50 ..plus due to being usually top heavy has made me want to seek as level a surface to settle on as possible. I will get a larger side stand foot print for sure, and keep your on/off techniques to practice with for this new to me baby gs.. .

  19. Thomas Querner on March 18, 2023 at 6:12 am

Truly helpful and interesting; still for mounting Your bike using footpegs You need a lot of confidence in Your kickstand !!

  26. Mike on March 18, 2023 at 6:17 am

I’m happy I watched. Just the other day I had my bike fall over in the garage because it was parked in neutral. I was zipping up the bag I have on the seat and very slightly rolled forward and did exactly what you said. In the fall the meter bracket broke. $25 bucks for that and now there’s a small dent on my new bike. Grrrr. Thanks for the tips.

amazing! i find people looking at me as if in a circus when i execute the reverse mounting and dismounting. i have learned that the trick is not to care 😀

  30. Pauly Flyer on March 18, 2023 at 6:22 am

Excellent video. Thank you so much.

  31. Smart Ass on March 18, 2023 at 6:27 am

If you can’t figure these things out on your own, just maybe you shouldn’t be on a motor cycle in the first place.

  32. Adrian Lema on March 18, 2023 at 6:27 am

another good tip that seems quite obvious but not everybody does is, in case you have a pillion, to make the pillion get off the bike first, in a safe and flat place and then proceed with all your recommendations

  33. Noah Paez on March 18, 2023 at 6:28 am

I always thought I looked goofy getting on my bike but I didn’t realize I had found the cowboy method on my own! My bike always has a top bag on the back so the "normal way" just never really worked as I would kick the box lmao

  34. Luis Hernandez on March 18, 2023 at 6:29 am

Great Tips, thanks for the emphasis on safety 👍

  35. Mark Gurren on March 18, 2023 at 6:29 am

This cowboy mount / dismount is a very good idea. I will be doing it from now on. Thanks for the great tip. 👍

  36. stuarth43 on March 18, 2023 at 6:30 am

my dear chappy, most of this is common sense, however some nice tips

  37. Eduardo Zamora on March 18, 2023 at 6:30 am

You are a amazing. Thank you!

  38. Earl Norman on March 18, 2023 at 6:32 am

None of this stuff works like you demonstrate when you are 125 pounds, and have a 26” inseam. If I have one foot on the ground, my other foot is a good 2 feet in the air. I have to disable the side stand safety switch and ride off with a wobble of the handlebars. That, or a “Hi-Yo Silver” mount with my left foot on the peg while releasing the clutch and throwing my leg over the seat.

  39. Gary Seven on March 18, 2023 at 6:32 am

Thank you , that was very helpful.

  43. Frank Morales III on March 18, 2023 at 6:39 am

I’ve always use the peg to mount and dismount my motorcycle, but I always do it from the right side of the motorcycle

  44. Richaag on March 18, 2023 at 6:40 am

The cowboy mount is really easy to do, but just know you’re going to end up repeatedly scuffing your seat, panniers and top box.

  45. ADV nomad on March 18, 2023 at 6:41 am

I’m glad someone made a video on this 😂 see so many people struggle because of their brains 🤪

  46. David Ray on March 18, 2023 at 6:41 am

This helped me a lot. Thanks

  47. Jan Coetzer on March 18, 2023 at 6:42 am

My Africa Twin AS really hates being mounted from the right hand side using the cowboy method – the suspension sags over to the right very quickly. When I do mount from the right, I have found that I need to pop up and over the center of gravity rather quickly to avoid the bike tipping rightwards.
    Good video! Thanks!

  48. Frank Morales III on March 18, 2023 at 6:43 am

I like Cassie Maier’s technique for getting on and off a Motorcycle.

  49. jude25 on March 18, 2023 at 6:46 am

So first thing, I paused the video and ran to the garage to make sure my GS is in 1st gear. Thank you!

I find this video isn’t just for noobs (that’s jargon for Newbies).
Helps to refresh riding skills even if you’ve been doing it accident free for years.
