In this video Marc lists the ten essentials that he carries in his pack when he’s out on his mountain bike. If you’d prefer, this kit should just about fit in a saddlebag and your pockets.
You need to carry sufficient spares and tools so that you’re covered for most eventualities out on the trail. There are some mechanicals that you can’t carry spares for – ideally you should screen for these in your pre-ride check: http://gmbn.eu/bikecheck
Here’s the list of stuff that you should take with you:
Hydration pack
2 x Inner tubes
Tyre levers
Pump (with some gaffer/duct tape wrapped around it)
Several zip ties
Multi-tool with a chain tool (carry a separate chain tool if your multi-tool doesn’t have one)
Powerlink (PRO TIP – tape it to your brake hose)
Food (a couple of energy bars or some flapjack is perfect, bananas might get a bit mushed up – especially in a backpack)
Some money, because everyone deserves the option of a post-ride pint
Mobile phone
Jacket/an extra layer
