The beginner MTB toolbox

The beginner MTB toolbox

So you’re new to mountain biking, but may or may not be new to tools. Either way, you want to get started maintaining your mountain bike. These are the very first tools you’ll need to perform the vast majority of repairs. As you get down to more advanced repairs like bleeding brakes, replacing bottom brackets, and pressing headsets, you’ll most certainly need additional tools. For your first year though, this should easily cover it.

Wire crimpers are good for cutting cables and housing and the crumpet on top is good for chain master links

  7. Neowise on June 27, 2019 at 8:32 pm

Honestly, I don’t get why everyone is using all the wrenches, etc. I just use bits for everything from dismantling my engines to getting stuck bolts loose.

L shaped T handle hex wrenches!

  9. newt on June 27, 2019 at 8:37 pm

Do NOT use a Saskatchewan All-size for your fork! It will slip and fuck up the flats, they’re just soft alloy! Mill down a socket, do it properly.

Is it bad to use butterknifes as tire leavers on a BMX tire with tubes?

  14. TheRealLouisWood on June 27, 2019 at 8:40 pm

I use a ammo box as a tool box

  15. Rinyotsu on June 27, 2019 at 8:41 pm

Don’t count Pittsburgh (harbor freight brand) out just yet. I replaced the head gasket in my car with a Pittsburgh metric socket set as the MVT (most valuable tool). Though the 13mm socket did crack replacing my wheel bearing last week and the Craftsman I bought 10 years ago powered through like nothing.

  20. CJ Nixon on June 27, 2019 at 8:45 pm

I work on cars a lot, just getting in to serious mountain biking though. Same as with my car, I’m gonna try and do most of my work myself. It’s good to have videos like this to know where to start with tools — thanks for that!

No more hanging my weight off of 30" breaker bars or ratchets with 5′ pipes over them though 😮

  21. Ceej Abogada on June 27, 2019 at 8:46 pm

Hey Seth we have the same tool box

  22. M. W on June 27, 2019 at 8:46 pm

Hi Seth, are you addicted to tacos??????????

  37. Jerry's on June 27, 2019 at 9:08 pm

I prefer the folding Allen key sets. Smaller package sort of like a multi-tool for just Allen keys.

  38. RealStealthyNinja on June 27, 2019 at 9:10 pm

Bondus is what Park Tools hex wrenches etc. are made from (or made by) so buy them instead of Park tools. Cheaper and just as good.

  39. Matthew Godwin on June 27, 2019 at 9:10 pm

Acetone is not the most skin or paint friendly, but works great for removing lots of adhesives and oils from cheap plastic bins or bare metal

  40. Isaac Rosenthal on June 27, 2019 at 9:12 pm

I have a really cool pair of tire levers that explains to both sides of the tire

  41. Artem Kasterin on June 27, 2019 at 9:13 pm

I don´t understand, how is it, that I can´t (dis)mount my plus-size tire (Schwalbe Rocket Ron tires on a Bulls rim) without (1.) breaking the bead by using my foot and (2.) using for the rest tirelevers? I mean I´m not that weak ,considering I´m a male junior competitive rower with nearly 8 years of training behind me (including weightlifting and all that stuff). Please help me, I feel stupid, when my (smaller) friend get his tire off in a pinch and I´m still working on that bead to break and then I need to ask for f*cking tirelevers?! Sry for my english issues I´m from germany but that doesn´t hold me off to watch your awesome videos Seth, thanks for all those smiles on my face every time I watch your videos!

  42. Mark Roberts on June 27, 2019 at 9:14 pm

Bruh, I bought a shock pump from a local shop for 120 aud and Seth is telling me they’re 20 bucks?

  47. LDee01 on June 27, 2019 at 9:22 pm

Important thing to know about torx…. You have torx, and Torx PLUS. Very similar, but wrenches are not interchangeable !

  48. Katten o Åkgräsklippare on June 27, 2019 at 9:23 pm

You almost have all tools as my dad!!! Man!!! Love your videos my the way.

  49. JBratt on June 27, 2019 at 9:24 pm

I worked as a bike mechanic for ten years and have done my own wrenching for much longer. Why am I watching this video? Because Seth is so darn entertaining.

  50. L on June 27, 2019 at 9:24 pm

Dear Seth, I have fitted Slime armour to kids wheels, but their sealant is terrible.
