Melbourne: Australia's Greatest Cycling City

Melbourne: Australia's Greatest Cycling City

At first glance, Melbourne’s just a big city, arcing around a bay in the south-east of Australia. It is those things, but riders see places differently. They see things like this: to the south – roads tracing the coastline, dotted with thousands of cyclists. To the east – a range of low mountains covered with temperate rainforest and ferns, overlaid with a web of gravel and tarmac. To the north – endless rolling hills and quiet country roads. And in the inner suburbs, a bike culture that’s the envy of every other state capital.

With all this and more going for it, little wonder that Melbourne is considered Australia’s greatest cycling city.

"I think some of them don’t shave their legs"
Do these amateurs actually shave because they think that’ll make them better?

Melbourne may have a great bike culture but it’s laughable to think that it has the best cycling in Aus. Come to Canberra. Excellent, well established urban paths and bike lanes. World class single track all over the city, some of the best at Bruce Ridge less than 2km from the CBD. Solid urban road climbs from easy (Mt Stromlo) to challenging (Black Mtn, Mt Ainslie). In Canberra you are never more than about 5km from the urban fringe. Quiet country roads both tar and gravel surround the city supplying amazing riding from your front door. The hills of Namadgi and The Brindabella Range give ample opportunities to climb proper hills. I could wax lyrical all day.

Man great vid, how was the ride on that allez disc? I’m surprised no review of the Allez Sprint Disc

  18. Adam Aldous on September 13, 2022 at 3:19 am

Everyone seems to be missing the point that Melbourne is the greatest due to its cycling culture and not necessarily the terrain.
If I had to choose a city due its terrain it would be Wollongong. Glad the worlds are being held there in 2022.

For me Melbourne is a better city for cycling than Amsterdam. Melbourne has clearer rules and regulations for cyclist, whereas in Amsterdam it can be a bit chaotic.

  25. Jackie van Schalkwyk on September 13, 2022 at 3:25 am

Great video… great rides… where is your favourite place to cycle road bike… how about Catalunya, Gerona, Costa Brava…?

  26. Dave Bishop on September 13, 2022 at 3:25 am

It seems that the criteria for the best cycling city is made up of pretentious factors e.g. cycling culture, bike shops, coffee, whether people shave their legs and wear $500 colourful kits, street art to photo your bike..
if you’re after the best and varied terrain and views, it’s definitely not Melbourne

  27. Sam Searle on September 13, 2022 at 3:26 am

If you want to smash out beach road or ‘the hills’ at yarra bends. Sydney coffee is way better plus you don’t have to deal with a howling gale screaming across Port Phillip Bay. Good wine though. Pretty sure that guy said there was a beautiful beach somewhere in Melbourne as well.

  28. #AkoSi- Bong on September 13, 2022 at 3:26 am

If you want to learn about hills take the freeway out to Ballarat turning off at Pentland Hills stop for lunch in the Blackwood Tea House then continue to Trentham and get the V-Line country train back to Melbourne.

  45. Luis Medeiros on September 13, 2022 at 3:44 am

Melbourne is nice for biek riding if you like to ride flats or ride 30 kms for proper climbs 🙂

  46. EMC2Scotia on September 13, 2022 at 3:45 am

This needs at least 2 more segments, which just proves in a way how great Melbourne is for cycling.

  47. Ross Wilkinson on September 13, 2022 at 3:46 am

One from thee past: in 1971, I rode up to Sassafras, had a cuppa with a survivor from the Bridge on the River Kwai, and rode down the 1in20 – well before it had its name. What made it interesting was that my brakes failed quite quickly aqd I rode down the rest of the way, using my mate as a brake.A memorable ride. Lovely video

  48. Pedro Junqueira on September 13, 2022 at 3:47 am

Questionable. Lived in both for a while. Melbourne has better food and bars for sure but that’s because its so bleak other than for 1 mth a year when it’s unbearably hot. Wine is better in Vic but beer is better in NSW. Coffee is better in Sydney as well. That guy who is the star of the ad makes the whole experience even more annoying. Cycling is more dangerous in Sydney for sure but better hills.
