When it comes to buying a bike, online shops win hands down on paper: they have a wider selection, they usually have better prices, and you can buy everything from the comfort of your own home without putting your grandma in the hospital. But there’s some things that online shops will never be able to do compared to local bike shops. Here’s local vs. online bike shops so you can decide where to best spend your hard earned money.

I’m a beyond fifty years of riding, cyclist, and it’s only important to shop local, if you want to have neighbors, and a community. I don’t have a local bike shop, but two an hour’s ride either way. This covid scam will destroy our towns, cities, and communities, if we don’t remember. I’ve been building and riding bikes since a boy, am waiting on a "fixed gear", got kind of drawn in by this and well, you know. I’ve not ridden a fixed gear since the 70’s, but, just have to do it, and I can remember the small circle that did so back then. I’ve enjoyed going around the world too, and found bikes, wood work, and machines a connection in any country, any city. Life is much better when you’ve seen how much of the world lives, makes you consider your own ways, often. I’ve really come to enjoy this, something I’ve not felt in decades. Thanks for the pleasure of revisiting "old friends".

I want advice: I bought a Genesis Flyer 2021 in aluminum… the seller was really quick and gave me a 120 dollar off and then they rebuilt it to a fixie with raiser bars directly in the store… I bought it the day before Christmas as a gift to myself… but when I tried it crossing some pedestrian edges between street and pedestrian pavement it felt really harsh crushing into the edges/stones… is the Genesis Flyer 2021 in aluminum a real horrible buy!? Have I thrown my money in the garbage!? I payed 7450 sek which is about 750 Euro… and then a good lock, raisers, grips, cog, front brake etc and ended up at 1040 sek 1040 euro or somewhere around those number!? Should I return it!? I was looking for a Cinelli Tipo Pista but they had none… Then I sae this to me totally unknown brand Genesis and the size was pretty good for me when I tested it… But after having tested it at home I started to have second thoughts… actually the first thing that happened at Christmas when I tested it is that I got hit by a taxi and got stuck in the straps and hurt my elbow and hip as I smacked right down in the ice beneath the taxi! 🥶🤕… so got kind of complex feelings if I will learn fixie now at all… any advice is good! the owner said he will take 70 dollar / euro to re-ensemble the bike to the single gear with drop bars as it was sold if I turn it back and I of course need to keep the raisers, grips, straps and lock… so is a loss but maybe is a loss worth to take to find a better choice down the road!? what you guys think!? Thanks a lot from a beginner! 🙏🏻

  7. iPUNK on July 21, 2022 at 10:45 pm

I live in London. Almost all small bike shops have closed down over the decade’s only leaving corporate owned retail shops. After learning then rebuilding 4 classic bikes summer 2020 I decided to buy 29er Barracuda Draco 4 for less than what it cost to retrofit my 30year old MTB with similar parts. Bike was perfect out of the box only needing grease on seat post during assembly

I would just say, finding a frame small enough for me was a challenge, but I’m glad that a shop in Oakland had one that’s perfect for me, and now I couldn’t be more grateful and excited that I was able to get a frame and parts locally

  17. Cesar Rodriguez on July 21, 2022 at 10:53 pm

The guy that owns my LBS was a complete asshole. Not only to me, but to everyone. And it sucks because we had a growing fixed gear community in my town, especially with covid. His shop is closed now because of his attitude. I feel bad for him but he’s the only one to blame. Now we have to go to the next town over or resort to online shops.

As a professional worker in IT maintenance, I also do some work that is not supposed to be done in a preventive way.
It just costs me time and no money BUT you can be sure those customers come back when they get a problem.
In your case, I guess being a youtuber (which I am not) makes things a tad different…

  21. Paul Lacey on July 21, 2022 at 11:04 pm

I buy my bikes and stuff from Decathlon, and find the stuff is decent for the price, and sometimes from online. So many local bike shops stock bikes and equipment at frightning prices now.I mean £11,000 for a bike? The shop in question did have bikes for less than that price mind but I feel ordinary cyclists arent being best served now.I want to shop local but they only cater to rich buyers now,not interested in coffees bars in bike shops either……which seems to be the way things are going!

  22. J.93 .F on July 21, 2022 at 11:04 pm

Would any of you recommend getting a bike fit before purchasing my first bike as an adult? I hear they are really useful for avoiding sizing issues later on. But it’s kinda expensive. Is it worth it if I’m new to biking?

The streets of Boston are still shite, so I have to watch YT vids instead. We have interesting bike shop options here, community based nonprofit/educational shops, regional bike shop chain, expensive/pretentious tiny shops and trusted hole-in-the-wall shops. I bounce between three of those options avoiding the expensive/pretentious. Current bikes my wife and I ride were purchased from a company that made all-in-one ebike wheels (battery/motor in one wheel) and now is trying to bust into the scooter-share market. The company sold off all bike inventory (basic single speed bikes meant to be sold with e-wheels). Crazy low price. Found out at one of the expensive/pretentious shops (visited when first opened) that they were offered to purchase those bikes in bulk. When shop guy realized that the bike was ordered online his attitude changed and all answers to questions were done over his shoulder as if he couldn’t be bothered. I’ve worked in shops and this attitude tracks with half the people I ever worked alongside. Made a purchase at that "new" shop (pedals and tubes) and never returned. Proverbial flip of a coin nowadays when in need of service. Wait times at shops have been as long as a month, but as fall yields to winter wait times have shortened. However parts shortages can keep a bike at a shop until they receive orders from distributors. During lockdown I’ve needed no service I couldn’t do myself and split purchases down the middle between online and LBS.

What camera do you use for filming?

  39. Ben on July 21, 2022 at 11:25 pm

Where I am there are only 3 LBS’s and all are full of dickheads that only care if you’re there buying a $5k bike

  40. elorz007 on July 21, 2022 at 11:28 pm

I have 4 LBS in my area and they are all 4 utter garbage. Never helpful, always refusing to do this job or that job on my bikes because some excuse, policy or whatever. And the few times I got them to do something the result was always worse than doing it myself. Perhaps I have been extremely unlucky with bikeshops but that’s my experience.
Also, they sometimes only sell this or that brand not because it’s a particularly good one but more because they have more or less margin or some exclusive deal with the brand.

Love going to my local bike shop,we have two where I love.
One is no help at all. They only try to sell exercise equipment,? Soon as you walk in the door.
Or selling you a e-bike,or a 10,000$ trike with tons of stuff on it. It is more motorcycle then bike? Crazy, but other bike shop is cool 😎. It’s named the bike rack,in Muskegon Michigan. Awesome shop, seen them help a kid patch his tire with no charge at all.

  43. John Pilling on July 21, 2022 at 11:31 pm

A good lbs is invaluable, but what would you want from one? I can pretty much fix anything from simple , like brakes,, through bottom brackets and headsets to full wheeel building, hell I even build up "new" bikes from old frames etc. So what am I looking for in my lbs. I would love to be able to pick up common tools and parts. If parts or tools need to be ordered then I would expect them to get them promptly and at a competitive price. New bikes – ditto! I have bought my last 3 new bikes from my lbs. Following getting hit by an SUV while riding I got the repairs done at my lbs because I needed a real receipt for the drivers insurance to pay for everything. I have 2 lbs’s close to me at my home in Florida. In one they are arrogant and everthing I need costs twice as much and they keep arguing with me about what I actually want. The other is just way too slow on getting me anything though their prices are comparable with online shops. I’d love to support them but… Its a big but…. I can get everything I need, delivered quickly onliine at a very good price. lbs’s lack the inventory to have what I need for rebuilds . It’s got to the point where friends are asking me to repair their bikes because I get it done way quicker than the lbs. At my other home on the Isle of Man there are 4 bike shops, 1 just round the corner from my house. Thi spast summer they got everything i wanted within a couple of days even during the pandemic, lent me a couple of tools, and all at "normal"prices – they let my wife try out the orbea gain ebike for a day and could source just the model we were looking for within a couple of weeks. I will be buying the bike through them. It is attitude that makes all the difference and that is what the local bike shop should be – listening, helpful, accomodating and going the extra "mile" – it makes all the difference. I wish that attitude translated across the pond to the US – but doesn’t seem to and perhaps that’s why the lbs stateside are dissappearing. There are exceptions I am sure . A big shout out to the Erin Bike Hut in Port Erin, Isle of Man for being there!

yo i wanna build a fixed gear but is it possible to use a tt frame for a fixed gear bike?

  46. jesus117 on July 21, 2022 at 11:35 pm

What you think of tribe bikes, they got triple butted frame and cafe and bone shaker, double butted 6061 frame so it’s low quality aluminum with high quality components

  48. ratoneJR on July 21, 2022 at 11:36 pm

i do my own service, i only need parts and some instruction. my lbs is great for both…usually. but some parts i have to buy online.

  49. Migs Dueñas on July 21, 2022 at 11:36 pm

Zach, the moment you said that local bike shops are operated by "people who love cycling, people that want to make your day better", I just immediately decided to write this comment. That is not the case for the 2 local bike shops near me. They are so unapproachable and self-centered especially if they know that you only ride an entry-level fixed gear. These people won’t even bother to entertain you. I may sound bitter, well I am. Dunno why this kind of "bike shop elitists" are prominent here in the Philippines.
