I was using any gear in low speed and my chain snapped so I decided to see what I did wrong and I figured I didn’t actually know how to change speeds and gears this has helped me learn it and hopefully it won’t happen again thanks a lot!

So the finger shift = up shift

  23. uit kijkpost on July 10, 2019 at 9:47 pm

NICE video! Thanx. In addition one should NEVER use force on the pedals while shifting the front gears; on the back gears some force is no problem

  24. kiyonexus on July 10, 2019 at 9:49 pm

    Jesus get a microphone

Edit: Jesus 3:04 I guess you finally listened half way into the video…

Finally, a great explanation of what levels I should be using with each major gear. Thanks for showing what to do with our hands rather than just showing the actual gears.

  34. Harsha Naidu on July 10, 2019 at 10:01 pm

Man, this guy makes it so easy. I’ve been through many videos, some of professional cyclists and still couldn’t figure out how to ride a 21 speed bike. Thank you Madison bikes for the great video ! πŸ˜„πŸ˜„

  35. Daphne Nugent on July 10, 2019 at 10:01 pm

Thank you! This was definitely the most helpful video for a beginner that I have found. I wish I could give you two thumbs up.

  36. Jason Jamal Nakleh on July 10, 2019 at 10:01 pm

    Thank you, this was helpful.

Range 1 uses gears 1 and 2. Range 2 can use any gear. Range 3 uses gears 3-7.

Easy to remember, thanks for making it clear!

  37. Christi on July 10, 2019 at 10:03 pm

    Thank you!

  39. kiyonexus on July 10, 2019 at 10:05 pm

I know cross chaining is bad, like being in front gear 1 and gear 7 on the back, but my chains would not even allow that, would immediately jam… Does that mean I need to index/align the front derailleur properly or should I just leave it the way it is since every other gear is working properly

  40. yioukar on July 10, 2019 at 10:06 pm

Thank you very much. You helped me a lot

Thank you! I’ve been googling and reading articles for 30 minutes trying to figure out what gears I actually use. This was insanely helpful, and makes me feel very comfortable riding the 21-speed I was gifted. Keep it on!

  47. ItzChris on July 10, 2019 at 10:10 pm

Great video, Just bought my first mountain bike and I had no idea how to use the 1-3 gears. Cheers

  48. Joseph Holliday on July 10, 2019 at 10:11 pm

I’m not sure I agree that the highest resistance automatically makes for more calories burnt. Higher resistance is more of a workout on the legs, but more impact on muscle than cardio. I’ve noticed from my experience that cadence has more influence on my heartrate than force, and increased heartrate makes for higher calorie burning cardio.
