How to Replace a Bicycle Grip Shifter

How to Replace a Bicycle Grip Shifter

Both Grip Shifts have recently disintegrated on my son’s mountain bike. I recently changed the 6 speed grip shift and in this video I’m here to show you how to change the 3 Speed Front Grip Shift.

Today’s Tool Kit
To change your Grip Shift you will need the following
– New Sram 3.0 Shifter 3 Speed Front Grip Shift. I bought mine here https://goo.gl/q1hTKu
– Adjustable spanner
– Pliers (incl. wire cutters)
– 3mm hex key (allen key)

To remove the existing Grip Shifter you need to loosen the hex clamp bolt on the underside of the Grip Shifter. It can then be slid off the handle bar. The cable can then be released from the front derailleur using the spanner, and pulled free of the bike. Note the position of the cable housing and the frame slots that the new cable will need to be located in, before removing the old cable.

You then slide the new Grip Shifter onto the handlebar, rotate the Grip Shifter until all three gear numbers are visible when you are sitting on the bicycle, and tighten the hex clamp bolt. Ensure the Grip Shifter gear points to gear number 1, and then re-thread the new cable through the cable housing, and thread the cable through all frame slots and back to the front derailleur.

Pull the cable until it’s taught and then tighten the nut on the front derailleur, fixing the cable in position.

Check the operation of the Grip Shifter to ensure that when moved through gears 1 to 3 the front derailleur moves the chain onto the right cog. Loosen or tighten the cable as necessary by loosening and then re-tightening the nut on the front derailleur, or if only minor adjustment is required, rotate the barrel adjuster on the underside of the Grip Shifter.

The music is too loud. I want to hear you speak, not some disco soundtrack.

  23. Platinum Dragon Productions on June 25, 2019 at 7:42 pm

The disco action backing track is the best! I watched at 1.5 speed so it was very motivating. 😀

  35. lucidbarrier on June 25, 2019 at 7:55 pm

Nice video! You should put one of those crimping ends on the cable after you cut it so it won’t fray again.
