How To Repair Loose Threaded Headset/Fork Play

How To Repair Loose Threaded Headset/Fork Play

The bike I was working on had a loose headset. This allowed the fork to wiggle back and forth slightly when I moved the handle bars. I show how to tighten up the headset to remove the play.

Is it possible to do this repair without the cone wrench?

  23. riddikssaga on January 2, 2023 at 2:41 am

Hey I think it’s super important that u mention to be careful not to eat into the treads while turning the nut all the way. U shouldn’t turn the nut all the way n force it beyond a point

  24. red rosie on January 2, 2023 at 2:41 am

I have the same headset. I don’t know how to remove it honestly. I want to remove the headset so I could repaint the frame. Could someone tell me what kind of handle bar is in the video so I could get a little bit of progress in the project.

Recently, I fell when I was riding my bike. But my headset twisted to the right and it’s staying in place. So if I turn my handle are straight, the wheel is turned to the left. Any help( sry if it wasn’t a good explanation)

  37. Singapore Untold Channel on January 2, 2023 at 2:54 am

Thanks bro. Had a loose headset on a foldie and was a simple fix. 👍🏻

  38. HRH Bucket on January 2, 2023 at 2:55 am

I had a bike with this problem but I found that when I tightened the headset it was either too tight or too loose (I just could not find the sweet spot). I eventually found that the reason was that the crown race had been slightly dented. I think the cause may have been that it had been loose for a long time and caused progressive damage.

I replaced the crown race (using another of your videos and a special tool you invented) and the bearings and everything was fine after that. Thanks.

Have you ever seen crown race damage caused by loose headsets. What percentage of bike with loose headsets would you estimate have damage to the crown race?

    Thanks again. Great video.
