How To Cut Handlebars Shorter On A Mountain Bike
How To Cut Handlebars Shorter On A Mountain Bike
I wanted some shorter length handlebars on my mountain bike for the XC type riding I do. So while I was at it, I decided to make a video of how to shorten handlebars. This is for ALUMINUM handlebars! Do not do this with CARBON FIBER handlebars! The pipe cutter cost Less than $4 at Harbor Freight. I demonstrate on one side. Just repeat the process on the other side.

Will the last part splinter my bars in any way
wow i didnt even know that tool existed, nice
is that a brass cutter tool?
Great point!
Ty… what size is that pipe cutter?
Nice video, but just want to tell anyone who’s thinking of cutting their bars that to cut off such a big piece on the first go will make a HUGE difference in feel. That’s a lot to cut off the first time. I’d recommend cutting off a bit less and see how you like it.
this worked great for me, also very satisfying
Any problem cutting the handlebars while they are still on the bike? Thanks RJ.
what happens if you skip the last part
how long does it take to cut with that tool?
They felt much better for me. I ride my road bikes more often than my mountain bike. And the really wide mountain bike bars just felt very awkward.
Or use a hacksaw…if your handlebar wall is 5 mm thick, like mine is.
what is that tool called!?
Though I do love how my bars feel now! 🙂
will this work on chromoly?
thanks a lot, you are very helpfull!!!
pipe cutter makes cleaner cuts then a hacksaw.
Just done the same on my bars, cut them from 760mm to 725, This tool is a godsend
I haven’t cut carbon fiber tubing before, but from what I have read, there are several options. First, you can cut it with a hack saw, though you will want to wrap spot you are cutting with masking tape to keep it from splintering. Second, you can cut it with a Dremel tool with a diamond coated blade. Third, you can cut it with a tile saw which has a diamond coated blade. You will probably want to wear mask to avoid breathing any of the dust. I recommend you search google for more info.
What is NOT mentioned here is how tough this is. I have been at mine for about an hour now, just finished the one side. Also, the pipe cutter was $10 and change at my local Orchard hardware store. Not less than $4 as mentioned. But still better than buying new bars, just be ready to use some elbow grease.
No, you don’t need to paint them. Aluminum doesn’t rust really.
Go ahead
Sounds right, we run ours at 590mm.
It’s a pipe cutter.
Go wash your feet u stinker
Thank you just what I was looking for straight to the point, thank you
