If you do choose to wear a helmet, there are a lot of options out there. The most important factor is comfort – you will be wearing this thing hopefully every time you ride your bike, so making sure it fits is paramount. After that, try and work out what suits you in terms of price point, the amount of ventilation it offers, even weight and aerodynamics – this becomes more of a consideration on higher end helmets.

An important point to mention is that all reputably sold helmets will have passed safety checks, so a more expensive helmet won’t mean greater safety.

Question to ponder do helmets give you a false sense of security – if you come off your bike on tarmac at 50kph would you have been safer if you came off your bike at 20 kph without a helmet …

Can a bike helmet be used for skateboarding? I happen to much prefer the look of bike helmets instead of the skateboard "bowl" shaped helmets, but I can’t find any skateboarder helmets that look like bike helmets?

  13. Bernt Nielsen on June 27, 2019 at 8:50 pm

    Helmets just dont look good.
But after Fabio Carsatellis tragic death in tour de france in 1995 it was the right decision to make it mandatory.

  15. Kermit T. Frog on June 27, 2019 at 8:53 pm

I suppose this means that you shouldn’t ever buy a used helmet.

I just bought my first helmet after nearly 40 year of cycling. $10, second hand, but it’s the same color as my bike. Isn’t that too gay ?

  18. Jamie E on June 27, 2019 at 8:58 pm

shopping for my first bike helmet, just so I’ll be able to ride with my friend’s kid

edit – bought that helmet… used some tips from this video and a couple from the comments to look less like an idiot in the process. 50 years old, been riding since I was a kid and haven’t landed on my head yet. So in one way it might be more likely to happen. Oh well, there’s enough helmets out there, at least I won’t look like the ‘special’ guy…

  23. FranBunnyFFXII on June 27, 2019 at 9:03 pm

"large protruding lump" Lol, that’s where your nuchel ligiment attaches silly.

  24. JillyBean860 on June 27, 2019 at 9:03 pm

I need the most compact helmet possible. I already have a big head so an exaggerative helmet just adds insult to injury lol 😂😂

  25. Christian Ingmar Kjølsvik on June 27, 2019 at 9:03 pm

No helmet is always lighter, better ventilated and more comfortable than any helmet, and costs literally infinity percent less.

  26. E F Rain on June 27, 2019 at 9:05 pm

This helmet should be considered as well> because you get more than just a helmet…….

  27. Puro on June 27, 2019 at 9:05 pm

"we feel you should wear your helmet every time you take your bike out for a ride"…. Say that in Netherlands or Denmark and you’ll be laughed at.
Helmets are good for sports cycling and a scientific fact about bicycles and helmets is that promoting bicycling with "always wear your helmet" gives off a negative connotation and in turn STOPS people from riding their bikes.
Wear a helmet and get hit by a car, the helmet has ZERO effect.
For sports cycling, yes, but don’t tell me to wear my helmet when I take my bike to the grocery store or to work, that just makes it seem dangerous to ride to work or the grocery store.

  28. Veterinarius on June 27, 2019 at 9:08 pm

Dont get this losers in the comment section with – Dont wear helmets, look fucks if you dont believe in safety dont wear one…NOONE gives a shit about your opinions.

Politicians are killing our children. Years ago the streets and trails were filled with children riding bicycles like they do today in many cities in Europe. The only people riding bicycles in North America are the idiot 30 to 60 year old adults who think they are in the Tour de France. I see this reckless fools all the time. Riding in traffic without any consideration for vehicles, recklessly flying around blind corners, and ultimately flying off their bicycles because they have no idea what they are doing, and they think they are invincible because they are wearing a helmet. Meanwhile our children are suffering. Adults constantly say "kids don’t go outside anymore." How can they? These ridiculous laws prohibit them from having the fun and freedom kids had years ago. Diabetes, heart disease, obesity etc. That is what is on the menu for our children in future years. Politicians and special interest groups are so safety conscious they are killing people. It has been proven time and time again by study after study. Bicycle helmets do much more harm than good.

I just bought the GIRO Switchblade, 4 days before a major accident.

  34. koko dwi on June 27, 2019 at 9:15 pm

    sorry before… are you wolferine??

  35. ylekiote99999 on June 27, 2019 at 9:16 pm

In my experience the people who wear helmets are the most disrespectful, least safety conscious, and least coordinated bicycle riders out there. Time and time again I see them competing with vehicles on the road, often times riding in car lanes and riding very arrogantly like everybody should make way for them. They are the ones who are always crashing, and invariably are always the ones making comments like "If I weren’t wearing a helmet that day I surely would have died." With or without a helmet you would have died because you ride like an idiot. Aside from that every single long term study done with regards to bicycle helmets prove that they are detrimental to safety. Bottom line…You would have to be an idiot to wear a bicycle helmet.

  37. aretoussa24 on June 27, 2019 at 9:17 pm

Hi! I wanted to ask if anyone knows about using a child’s helmet. So, today I went to a local bike shop(not in the UK ATM) to buy a helmet. They measured my head and considering my size(52cm) they gave me a bell helmet, which fitted kinda ok on my head. I bought it, then realised it was a kid’s helmet. Do you think I shall return it? Cause I did a bit research online and some ppl say that even if it fits well on an adult’s head, it still isn’t safe. Could someone advise, please? Thanks in advance!

Ok some good advice. But are there any helmets for people with a long narrow headshape? Almost all of the helmets look really ugly on my head.

I guess Kask make good helmets then!

GCN videos are not always the informative ones. They are not like the kind of videos that teach you something new than you wouldn’t intuitively guess. Nonetheless I will keep on watching more and more of them and some of them even twice just to hear again and again what I already know. And of course hear all of you guys speak up your minds. Not a subscriber by the way.. I am not good at commitment. If i follow yous I will lose the interest in watching your videos because they will bore me as I will be recieving them non stop. I like it when I come to seek them here. And hate when you ask me to subscribe. Anyway, I will just stay outside and watch yous through the window.
    Loves from Dublin 🍀.
