Her First Time Using New Cycling Shoes & SPD Pedals

Her First Time Using New Cycling Shoes & SPD Pedals

We’ve gotten a lot of comments on our YouTube channel for my wife’s accomplishment of cycling 200km to Osaka from Nagoya on flat pedals with regular shoes. Many people have told me to get her a pair of cycling shoes, and we finally did that! Today, Thuong will be trying out her new cycling shoes and Shimano SPD pedals for the very first time!

Diadora X Trivex Plus II Womens cycling shoes

I actually bought her these shoes a couple months ago, but we were lacking cleats for her to use, and then she had to go back to Vietnam for a few weeks. After arriving back in Japan, we had some rides already planned, and didn’t want to risk learning on the main roads, so we decided to wait..

Today we went to Morikoro Park’s Cycling course, which is a safe 5km course for bicycles only.

As beginner, clipping out both feet can be dangerous because you cannot use a pedal to stay one, which without is a habit. Keep one foot clipped in, get from the saddle, then the other foot on the ground. Starting a ride: No pole. Just hit whatever pedal is ahead of the other.

We have something similar to this, except in a grander scale in Tucson, Arizona called the Loop. Approximately 210 km around the city avoiding all traffic. The only problem is pedestrians are allowed. Would love a large course for cycling only.

It’s a nice video for people who are hesitating to use a pedal/shoe system like SPD in this film. I only want to mention that a SPD system like in this film, is mostly used in MountainBiking. For road cycling there is another pedal system (the three bold road cycling clip-in). This system offers a more stable platform and enhances the power.
Unfortunenatly they not great for walking. The SPD system is easyier to walk with. Nevertheless great video. I send it to a lady who has already the shoes and the cleats. But afraid to use it, afraid to fall and become injured or get damaged her nice legs…
    It’s a choice.

She made it seem so easy. I keep falling and struggling to clip in 😖

oh man, hope we also had such kind of track.

  32. Johnny D. Wicked on July 15, 2019 at 12:10 am

Hey, Cruise, so I just recently got into clipless pedals. I bought a pair of Five Ten mtb SPD shoes and Shimano M530 pedals. Is it normal to feel the cleat contacting the ground when you walk just slightly? What about a teeter-totter tilt sensation when you walk in them? I know they make crunching cracking eggshell sound when I walk on gravel. It’s my first time using spd shoes and clipless pedals so I’m not sure if my shoes were defective or it’s just a normal thing for such kind of shoes. Also, how are you suppose to fully utilize the clipless pedals? I know you’re not supposed to mash them by pressing the pedals down hard but instead just feather it. Am I using it correctly?

That is what I will have to do in few months. Though I am happy my wife is exited to start her new experience.

  36. Naptime875 on July 15, 2019 at 12:15 am

I think it would be easier to have her first clip with the pedal at 6 o’clock so she can put more weight on it with less balancing, then try to clip the second one while moving like you would on the street lol. but yea clipping in and out the first few times is pretty strange. I think some places recommend you just practice at home leaning against a wall until it gets comfortable

  37. james clark on July 15, 2019 at 12:17 am

    does it really increases performance

  43. uomorana71 on July 15, 2019 at 12:28 am

to simplify engaging/disengaging you can untighten the allen bolt that make the cleat engage
judging by the sound it makes it’s quite tight…

  44. muhammad ja'afar on July 15, 2019 at 12:30 am
