GMBN Vs GCN | From Here To There: MTB Vs Road Bike Challenge

A question older than time itself, which is faster? A road bike on the road, or a mountain bike off road? To find out we went to Snowdonia National Park with the new Garmin Edge 530 and Edge 830. Will the more direct off road route be faster than the longer but smoother road route? Watch now to find out!

The objective; find some welshcakes before racing to a picturesque picnic spot underneath a waterfall. The riders; our very own Neil Donoghue, and the contender, Hank from GCN. The routes (planned with Komoot); Neil will be taking on a 16 mile off road point to point, stopping off to get welsh cakes on his way to the waterfall; Hank will have 34 miles to cover, picking up the welsh cakes before doubling back on himself to get to the finish. The new Garmins feature MTB Dynamics, technology that measures your airtime, the difficulty of your ride, and rider skill (known as Grit and Flow). Rider to rider messaging will help Hank and Neil let each other know when they’ve secured their Welsh cakes. The live track feature will let them know if they need to get a move on!

    My arse, it’s true trails aren’t maintained or even built as well, but just the fact that you’re not breathing car exhaust fumes makes it worth it ten times more, I’d go on a trail even if it were 3x longer and with 5000% more rolling resistance just to avoid the cancer that is fucking traffic. (I’m also almost sure that calories counter is many wrong)

    The main advantage of MTB is that you can be acceptable fast on the road and very effective in the rough terrain. On the road bike you would be much faster on the road and that’s all 😉

    The most imporant factor here is there is not meter or gauge which measures the force required per rpm of the crank. Not once did the road biker have to get off his steed and push it, unlike the mtb’er. Not a fair race by any stretch of the imagination. Not to mention the purely awesome vistas the mtb’er got to enjoy, much less almost being hit by 2,500lb steel boxes aka cars.

    Road bikes are extremely breakable and straight up painful for me to ride, so even if it weren’t for the leg shaving and skintight clothes, even if mountain bikes entailed the same and could only go on the streets, I would still live mountain bikes, beach cruisers, lowriders, BMX, trikes, and literally anything else on the road more than a road bike.
