Fixing SRAM Grip Shift Shifter That Won't Click/Stay In Gear

Fixing SRAM Grip Shift Shifter That Won't Click/Stay In Gear

I show how to repair a SRAM Grip Shift shifter that does not click, won’t catch, and won’t stay in gear. When you twist the shifter, the derailleur shifters, but when you release the shifter, it slips right back to the smallest cog, or chain ring. The problem is generally the indexing spring inside the shifter.

Great videos! I could watch them all day. I’ve messed with Grip Shifts a lot. I find it’s best to remove them with the shifter in low gear (or even a tiny bit beyond) and replace them with high gear lined up. There is a thing inside your model of Grip Shift that Sram calls the "diving board." It helps me to remember that you put the long end of the spring "under" the "diving board." Keep up the great work!

Actually just use water on the grips. Alcohol tends to melt the rubber. From my experience.

RJ – Love your informative videos. Do you have any videos about converting a steel frame bike from 5 speed(27" wheel) to 15 speed (700C wheel) covering any problems & how to overcome them, like cog spacers, wheel centering etc? Thanks for all the info so far.

  21. CopperCettle on July 19, 2022 at 10:53 pm

cutting the cable seemed unnecessary to me, just loosen it at the other end

  22. Ken Bad on July 19, 2022 at 10:54 pm

Hello I know this is off topic and this videos is 4 months old already but I was a little insulted when I was watching your video about converting to disc brakes with a frame that has no connection mount. I have been using those adapters you called cheap. You called the black one a cheap thing and the aluminum ones that you were using were better I don’t think so just because you paid more money for makes them better. Those black ones I’ve been using for years they’re still on my bikes and my bikes are well over 10 years two brand new and they’re still working fine they’re strong they’re made of steel the aluminum ones are thicker because they’re aluminum but the black ones don’t need to be that thick because there made of steel. Mine are still lasting like I said and when put on right they don’t need much adjustment year after year and they work just fine if you know how to install one and calibrate them.

  32. callmemumar on July 19, 2022 at 11:04 pm

I hope my comment will be noticed. I have that grip shift shifter with 1 to 8. Is it okay if my sprocket is Shimano Deore 7 speed? I used my bike for a long time with what I have mentioned. Or do I need to change either the grip or the sprocket?

  33. Jeffrey Potter on July 19, 2022 at 11:06 pm

I enjoy your videos. They are easy to follow, and I appreciate that you use resources that are "readily available" to most people (like the alcohol!). Thanks for all you do!

Well, this is a lifesaver! I just did some adjustments on my sister-in-laws bike and a grip shifter stopped clicking and holding position. I’m hoping that it’s a case of the spring mysteriously popping out of place rather than breaking.

  41. Moussa Miller on July 19, 2022 at 11:17 pm

My index spring just completely cracked in half rip

  42. hayiko on July 19, 2022 at 11:18 pm

Hey Rj have you ever tried repacking or replacing the bearings of an external bottom bracket?

  44. ItsSimplyJoeyPlayz on July 19, 2022 at 11:21 pm

My shifter is stuck on the biggest sprocket and wont shift to the smallest sprocket is there a video that would help me

  45. Toshimi Minoura on July 19, 2022 at 11:21 pm

Even when the spring is correctly inserted, slipping of indexed positions occur, then slightly widen the gap between the upper part and the lower part of the spring. On ther other hand, rotating the grip is too hard even when a cable is not attached, decrese the mentioned gap a little.

  46. Redblade on July 19, 2022 at 11:26 pm

    RJ The Bike Guy.
Why cut the cable when you can unhook it?

  47. Telecastvids on July 19, 2022 at 11:27 pm

Thanks mate, helped a lot. The metal spring bit on my grip shift came out and I couldn’t see where it went back into. Sorted it now, cheers.

I’m a bike mechanic in the Netherlands. We had this problem with a customer’s bike a few months ago. We ended up replacing the whole shifter… Woops, if only! You’re awesome!! Thanks for sharing
