Today we're going to be taking a look at the Hollywood Racks Sport Rider 2 platform style two bike rack. The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider is a great bike rack for carrying two bikes. It holds them by their frame which means it's going to work with a wide variety of styles. We've got a mountain bike and a road bike here, but it's also going to work out with women's bikes, children's bikes, and bikes with alternative frame styles.How it works is the frame hook puts down pressure on the bike's top tube into the front and rear wheel cradles, and then a strap keeps our wheels in place. Like most premium style bike racks, it tilts away so we can gain access to our rear hatch. To do so, you want to remove these two pins.
We can remove the larger one first. You may have to lift up on your bike rack slightly just to allow that to easily slide out. Then, we can remove the smaller pin. Then, we can gently tilt it away until it rests. As you can see, we can open up our rear hatch, and depending on your vehicle you may or may not be able to open it up all the way.
With ours we can just slightly tilt our bike out a little bit more and, as you can see, we can open it up all the way. Now we can remove any cargo, gear, groceries, anything we might have with us on our trip.I’ve gone ahead and taken off the bikes so we can take a closer look. The hooks are adjustable along the center mast. They ratchet down over our bike. Their also rubber-coated to prevent any harm to our bike’s top tube.
The large button allows us to raise the hook up when we’re ready to remove our bike. Now the nice thing is, is it’s lockable. That way no one can remove our bike but us.The wheel cradles are adjustable along the platform to work with bikes with different sized wheel bases. An example would be a kid-size bike versus an adult-size bike. The kid’s would be closer together, and the adult’s would be further out.
Once you’ve got it in place you simply just tighten it down. Now, the cradles themselves are going to work with tire widths up to three inches wide. The wheel strap itself is a hook and loop strap. It simply goes over our wheel and connects back to itself.The Sport Rider has a five inch shank rise. Not only is this going to give us better ground clearance here at the rear, but it’s going to give us a higher loading height for our bikes. That was it’s not so strenuous on our backs. I also like to point out the separation between the two cradles. This is going to better help minimize bike-to-bike contact. From center on center we’re about 10 and a half inches apart.When your Sport Rider is not in use the center mast folds down to the right. Simply remove the pin, then replace it into the realigned holes here. By doing this, without having to tilt it away you can access your rear hatch. Now the bike rack can be stowed like this if you’d like, or if you’re looking for more clearance at the rear, you can fold it up against the vehicle like so. This would be ideal for pulling in a close-quarter parking spot or in your garage.You’ll notice that the pin that holds the center mast in place doesn’t use a clip to prevent it from sliding out. It actually has a little tab that locks it in place. Once it’s lined up with the notch on the bike rack it can be turned and this will prevent it from sliding out.One minor detail that separates this bike rack from others is this little rubber bumper here. When the base is folded up it makes contact and then it becomes an isolator. It’s going to prevent all that noise and rattling that other bike racks might have when it’s folded up.Now it includes an anti-rattle bolt and lock. The nice thing about the anti-rattle bolt is it’s going to help remove all that play and rattle within your hitch receiver and your bike rack to make a nice, solid ride for your bikes. With it all tightened up, you can see I’m actually shaking the whole vehicle there with no movement at all. The nice thing about the lock is no one’s going to be able to remove our bike rack from our hitch. Nice feature is it is keyed alike to the frame hooks on our center mass. It includes two keys.The Hollywood Racks Sport Rider has a weight capacity of 45 pounds per bike. It’s made out of a durable steel construction with a black powder coat finish.
