Do You Need 12 Speed? | Tech Q's | Cycling Weekly

With Campagnolo launching their 12 speed Record and Super Record groups we ask simple question: “Do we/you need 12 speed groupset? Does it bring any significant difference to the 11 speed one? Subscribe to Cycling Weekly here: https://www.youtube.com/user/CyclingWeekly1?sub_confirmation=1

    Don’t forget the 165 crank
Campy hasn’t one of those in years

    12…1x

  5. Szan Kony on December 3, 2020 at 9:19 pm

In my road bike shown in this today strava activity https://www.strava.com/activities/1570245721 I use custom made laser cut stainless steel drivetrain oval 62T/52T/42T x 14T-38T casette, so no need no more buy any group sets 😉 I also use custom made tri bars integrated with brakes for quick easy access – not mention aerodynamic bidon with fluid pipe to keep aerodynamic position as long as needed 🙂

  6. Ludovico Crespi on December 3, 2020 at 9:25 pm

12 speed is better than 11 but se could live anyway

  7. Ryon Beachner on December 3, 2020 at 9:28 pm

Worth noting Shimano has a patent for 14 Speed.

Also, if I had to bet the next big thing will be the integration of Shimano’s power meters into the DI2 ecosystem allowing the rider to set a target power range with the groupset handling gear changes to keep the riders effort consistent. All the pieces are in place, it’s just a matter of software at this point. Could be a great training tool.

  8. Fullgas on December 3, 2020 at 9:30 pm

12 speed is a fantastic way to get smooth transitions between gears. Not enough of a change to warrant upgrading, but definitely on a new build. Shimano are constantly behind the times. They just produce what people want where Campagnolo produce what you should be using. Have you ever been asked how you want your steak done in a real Italian restaurant???????????

  9. Low hanging fruit on December 3, 2020 at 9:30 pm

You never heard of a snapped 11sp chain? Right! 🙂 To be hosnest Id much rather have a (reasonably priced) 11sp 12-28 or 12-29 than a 12sp system. Atm Im on 10sp 12-28 and its perfectly fine. It has the same gear spacing as 11sp 11-28 bar the 11t that I have missed zero times. Really wish Shimano would make a 10sp 13-29 like Campag does.

  10. They Live We See on December 3, 2020 at 9:33 pm

    who rides campy anyway??

  11. ant307 on December 3, 2020 at 9:33 pm

    No we don’t, end of.

  12. JogBird on December 3, 2020 at 9:35 pm

    for mtb, yes
    for road, no

  13. thelbp on December 3, 2020 at 9:37 pm

    Need? no!
    want? yes!
12 speed would allow the same gear jumps from 11-32 with an extra 36 tooth in the back.
perfect for semi-compacts and still have that 1:1 gear for hills
or compact with 34:36 for those who live in the hills (just like me)
13 speed with a 40 in the back would be my dream, to be honest i didn’t know that 30% grades existed
and oh boy they do exist! and after a 100km+ ride they feel like vertical walls.

  14. John O'Neill on December 3, 2020 at 9:37 pm

Funny thing is there are people in Kansas and Florida that never see a mountain that are going to run out and desperately seek out more and more gears as they go on sale. Meanwhile there are 70+ year old guys in Montana climbing huge mountains on five speed freewheels without a problem.

  15. James on December 3, 2020 at 9:37 pm

Ultimately Human life is a random event and is meaningless.

  16. John Bouttell on December 3, 2020 at 9:39 pm

I don’t want an extra gear

  17. Andy Corso on December 3, 2020 at 9:41 pm

    This is just waffle….expected more

  18. Mark P on December 3, 2020 at 9:41 pm

You could get better ratios out of the 11 speed but just dropping the 11 or 12 speed cogs. Do a 12-32 or 13-34.. I am middle aged rider and never get to use my 11 or 12. For those of us who do not race and don’t have the power, this would make for a more useful range.

  19. quwers on December 3, 2020 at 9:42 pm

I’d like a 13-32 cassette for general riding. 50*11 or 12 is just pointless for the riding I do. Campag make a 11-27 so the new 11-28 12 speed has the same gaps as before.

  20. Mike Foster on December 3, 2020 at 9:44 pm

NO! 10 sp is my max and I only use about 5 of the on my 53/42 chainring an of course I only ride steel 🙂

  21. SpectreLabs on December 3, 2020 at 9:44 pm

Recently, a bike engineer exposed the truth about 12-speed and the marketing hype behind it:

  22. jlebrech on December 3, 2020 at 9:44 pm

    Sora Di3 triple

  23. Kevin Rowe on December 3, 2020 at 9:44 pm

You two really struggle, where’s Ollie?

  24. heytreacle on December 3, 2020 at 9:46 pm

I never used to snap chains, and I used to hammer an 8/9 speed downhill bike. I’ve snapped chains more recently though and as chains get ever thinner I get ever less confident in them. So, no, I don’t particularly want to move to 12 speed.

  25. Ashley's Big Boy Bike Ride on December 3, 2020 at 9:51 pm

11-46 or 11-42 cassete for a 1x12speed groupset would be great to see on a road bike

  26. Ryon Beachner on December 3, 2020 at 9:51 pm

Everybody complaining this vid doesn’t have Ollie, apparently no one appreciates a good conversation about tech. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  27. Martin Lancaster on December 3, 2020 at 9:54 pm

Jesus I’m only just getting 10 speed.

  28. jlebrech on December 3, 2020 at 9:55 pm

I need a chain that NEVER falls off no matter how badly it’s maintained 9 speed and above. I’m thinking of pinion gearboxes and tune the range before each ride.

  29. TheGamingCucumber on December 3, 2020 at 9:56 pm

I love that the poll is upgrade from 11 to 12 but i only have 8 speed ATM. lol.

  30. Birdy Mahtats on December 3, 2020 at 9:56 pm

Upgrade no. When I change and it’s the thing I’ll buy. Like I did with 10 and then 11. We should be focusing on the speed and smoothness of change for multiple gear shifts. I have the first edition Ultegra disc: hoods are an abomination of design and are unwieldy and uncomfortable. Multiple gear changes and/or dropping the front mech at the same time is an appalling experience. It is truly the worst piece of overpriced junk engineering ever produced in the industry. So precise, best in engineering – no. Only producing things that are tested at their best – no.

  31. Chris van Buggenum on December 3, 2020 at 9:57 pm

I’d love an extra gear. I ride 11-28 and I’d love an extra gear to go to 30 or 32 for those especially hard climbs, but I don’t want to have bigger gaps so I need that extra gear. Bring it on shimano.

  32. Jon Burnell on December 3, 2020 at 9:59 pm

I personally can’t see the point in twelve speed on a 2x or 3x system as there are so many duplicated ratios on an 11 speed anyway. However, when it comes to 1x this is brilliant.

  33. Mike Simms on December 3, 2020 at 10:02 pm

I only use 8 or 9 of the gears on my 11 speed system. I have no desire for a 12 speed cassette on my road bike. It’s not like I’m not climbing Alpe d’Huez every morning.

  34. jojojaykay on December 3, 2020 at 10:02 pm

    This is going too far.

  35. Yemi2009 on December 3, 2020 at 10:02 pm

    No.

  36. Clinton Hadenham on December 3, 2020 at 10:03 pm

1 gear for me. Goes uphill, downhill, flats, no shifting problems, no broken chains, and most of the time faster than the overweight Latte sippers busting seams on their kit to get to the next cafe. Get a bike & ride hard.

  37. Was Rio on December 3, 2020 at 10:03 pm

With the upgrade path and EPS V3 I wonder if a software update will accommodate the new cassette

  38. Teun Luijbregts on December 3, 2020 at 10:05 pm

Basically this is the same question as “do you need six speed?”. No we don’t – but we want it.

  39. Haryder on December 3, 2020 at 10:06 pm

I still in love my campy veloce.

  40. Jensen Healey on December 3, 2020 at 10:07 pm

I had a bike sales person at a shop tell me that he thought new bikes coming out would all have through axles even if they were rim brake bikes because he felt manufacturers would standardize on through axles. Do any of you tech folks at Cycling Weekly ever hear anything like this from the bike manufacturers?

  41. Al Gepé on December 3, 2020 at 10:07 pm

Pointless video filled with adds. not good, not good.

  42. Owen Geach on December 3, 2020 at 10:07 pm

The lad on the right needs another jumper. I’m pretty sure he’s wearing the same in every video?! Just saying.

  43. Dmitry Shevyakov on December 3, 2020 at 10:09 pm

ok. why not triple in the front? cheaper 3-4 times than campa 12.

  44. xbv-93 on December 3, 2020 at 10:09 pm

Just not the same without Ollie

  45. xbv-93 on December 3, 2020 at 10:12 pm

To be honest this should really be Ollie’s youtube channel with the title sponsor being cycling weekly. Im only subbed for Ollie

  46. Pee Hoo on December 3, 2020 at 10:12 pm

    I have 14 speed.

  47. TeamUSASportsFan on December 3, 2020 at 10:13 pm

I don’t have any need for twenty-one speeds, since I only find the medium and fast gears as the pracical ones, on the crank. Also, I don’t use first gear in any non-low ranges. Gears 2-7 times gears 2-3…these twelve gears will do and only eight of them are practicle: gears 2, 3, 4, and 5 in second range plus gears 4, 5, 6, and 7 in third range, just like how you would shift a six speed double. If I actually had a twelve speed, my shift pattern would have been like this: 1, 2, 3, and 4 on low, 3, 4, 5, and 6 on high. Afterall, you do not want to be in five or higher out of six, while using low gear in the front.

  48. Niidea1986 on December 3, 2020 at 10:14 pm

"Shimano: everything has to work, and there needs to be a reason, we don’t just make products so people can buy them" Ouch, I don’t know if that was intentional, but it was quite harsh with Campagnolo and their new group o.o

  49. Deacon Blues on December 3, 2020 at 10:14 pm

    Too many freaking commercials!

  50. Andy Stone on December 3, 2020 at 10:15 pm
