How much difference is there between a Canyon superbike with the latest Shimano Dura Ace R9170 Hydraulic groupset, and a bike bought from Ebay for £90?

Matt and Si compete in four challenges: climbing, descending, braking, and time trialling, to see how big the difference is between the two bikes.

Although the differences are pretty big between the two bikes, its not to say that you can’t have a great time on a cheaper bike.

my bike has gained a ton of speed. I dont know if having lost 60 pounds from when i got it to now, has anything to do with it?

  2. Renee Ball on June 27, 2019 at 8:25 pm

This video is making me feel cocky! I handle lots of big climbs on my 1986 Chromoly Road bike lol. as well, my old school 7 gear cassette has higher resistance than newer road bikes haha.

  3. ron kirk50 on June 27, 2019 at 8:25 pm

Did a 14,000 mile tour in the U.S. and Canada, the continental mtn. bike route, the Florida trail, the Pacific coast route and the Baja divide route all on a $350.00 motobecane mountain bike plus racks and panniers. Aluminum frame, hydraulic disc brakes and medium grade SRAM components with 27 speeds from bikesdirect.com. Any more than that spent on gear is just status and posturing.

  4. EyesInTheDark1 on June 27, 2019 at 8:27 pm

My local bike shop wants $3,000 for a bike.

i have a 1970 nishiki steel bike and my new ’19 s-works tarmac. let me tell you, in every way possible, the carbon bike is so much faster. i feel like its easier to put power down too. call me crazy but i average 50 watts more on the carbon frame

  7. e m griffiths on June 27, 2019 at 8:33 pm

The feel of a bike is important to me I have a higher end hybrid and hate it compared to a junker I built out of parts and bikes I found laying around in alleys

I am a 59 year old woman, I have a 17kg city-bike with 4 speed that i had for free and I climb passes slowly, slowly, slowly but surely … Was just wondering : should I buy a 1500€ light bike ? Now wondering : what am I doing here?

At the end of the day you gotta pedal them both you will just get stronger

  12. Jaya365 on June 27, 2019 at 8:41 pm

Bikes and the Mamils make me laugh. Law of diminishing returns, if you’re a 14st beer belly then you can save the money and get yourself of a diet for better results rather than going out and blowing all your cash. But that’s not going to get bike envy and get people talking. The top cycles and the people who ride them at amateur levels is the cheaper equivelent of the mid-life crisis porsche.

The most important thing is wearing full lycra so you look like a knob doing it

  14. Pat Seb on June 27, 2019 at 8:45 pm

This is the strangest episode of top gear I have ever seen.

  15. AnarchoMcTasteeFreeze on June 27, 2019 at 8:46 pm

Where can I get that bike for ninety pounds?!

  16. Lou Perdrix on June 27, 2019 at 8:46 pm

This video does not concern "the choice of a bike" but the choice of a RACE bike. The goal is speed performance. And so the answer is obvious: the weight of the bike is decisive.

  17. Sean Williams on June 27, 2019 at 8:47 pm

A decent, lightweight wheelset (~1400g) will transform most low to mid-range bikes IMO

  18. Matt Storey on June 27, 2019 at 8:48 pm

  20. Dhgff Fhcdujhv on June 27, 2019 at 8:53 pm

Stopping test …. Shouldn’t you compare cheap v expencive disk breaks ? Pads v disk breaks don’t even come close to begin with.

  21. Kavalan on June 27, 2019 at 8:54 pm

Don’t know why I’m watching this, I don’t even ride or have a bike lol.

  24. John Ohkuma-Thiel on June 27, 2019 at 8:55 pm

Only 90 pounds for the Raleigh?! That’s a steal! And basically, unless you’re racing, who cares. Sure, it’s nice to ride a super bike on your club rides, but most of us don’t need it, and there doesn’t seem a significant enough difference for the average rider to say they must have the super bike.

I hope when you were done with the comparison, you sold the Raleigh to someone who could really appreciate it.

I want ur raleigh bike it’s not cheap can i hve that ty vry much

  29. Milos Stojanovic on June 27, 2019 at 8:58 pm

Hard brake pads are obviously problem on that bike, they needs to be replaced to softer pads, because they drive on wet conditions those pads are not good so it is not relevant result.

  30. mohammed uddin on June 27, 2019 at 8:59 pm

I don’t even know what I’m doing here, I can’t even ride a bike. Also 90 quid is considered cheap! damn

So if you race bikes for a living then the super bike matters. Otherwise not

  35. Back To The Origins on June 27, 2019 at 9:04 pm

Is that a cheap bike..? I was expecting some basic supermarket bike

  36. Shinobi on June 27, 2019 at 9:04 pm

But why are they stuffing their crotch with socks?

  37. Jason Nunya on June 27, 2019 at 9:05 pm

lol. The cheapest Raleigh is still light years ahead of an actual cheap mass market bike from China.

  38. KRAZEEIZATION on June 27, 2019 at 9:05 pm

I’m still on steel frames. I’ll never ride carbon. Hate it.

Why are they wearing a Jockstrap? Loks ridiculous 😀

  41. jim crow on June 27, 2019 at 9:07 pm

Do your brakes squeal like a pig?

  42. MrJimbok1 on June 27, 2019 at 9:08 pm

You changed the rear cassette in the super-bike. The cheap bike should have been allowed a few upgrades like new brake pads and a new rear cassette with the same number of gears. If you are thinking of getting a newbike bike which is vastly more expensive than your current bike, maybe a few hours with a coach could upgrade your riding more than a 10,000 bike and last for life.

  43. Deniz Durmus on June 27, 2019 at 9:08 pm

Did anybody mentioned the crack in the fork crown at 8.58? Right through the welding…

  44. Liz on June 27, 2019 at 9:09 pm

lol some people in this world would be totally happy just to even have that raleigh. actually, i have a raleigh hahaha. and it looks so nice. I see so many old bikes, and so many people riding bikes that are soo old. And I feel like I should be grateful just to have been able to buy a new one. i feel like if I bought an expensive bike for my normal daily exercise, I’d feel it was excessive. Unless I suppose I was a professional.

  45. Prometheus on June 27, 2019 at 9:09 pm

Like the guy says, Sora brakes will make a big difference, and I reckon if they replaced the stock Raleigh cassette and chainring with a wide ratio gear set, the Raleigh wouldn’t do badly. Anyway, the only reason to care about the difference is if you’re racing for serious money, and 99.999% of us aren’t. As others have said, most of us can make a much bigger difference if we drop a few pounds off our beer bellies.

  46. Red Sev on June 27, 2019 at 9:10 pm

So you have to drive twice as much to get the same exercise?

  47. Crazylegs on June 27, 2019 at 9:14 pm

Looks like average Joe Spending thousands on a push bike is completely wasting his money. There plenty of you dumb fucks out there well done 👍
