Carbon Fiber Mountain Bikes from Walmart – The Frames are Better Than You Think! Hyper Carbon X 29

Carbon Fiber Mountain Bikes from Walmart – The Frames are Better Than You Think! Hyper Carbon X 29

Hyper Bicycles has sold a Carbon Fiber Mountain Bike at Walmart since 2018. I turned the Carbon X 26 into Project X and love it! In 2020 Walmart released the Carbon X 29. I had mixed opinions on the 29er Carbon X, mostly due to the steep head tube angle they chose for that model. It’s now 2023 and I’ve decided to make a few upgrades to that bike. In the process I discovered some features I didn’t know it had….AND that there have been a few changes that make the bike even better!

Watched your video on the Hyper Carbon 29 and walked away confused. I understand that Hyper sells a Carbon Mod 29xc direct to consumers for $1700, but I’m not clear about what I will get from Walmart if I were to buy a 2023 Hyper Carbon 29. Does it have new frame geometry with 69 deg head tube angle, and ability to add a tapered stem fork? And if that’s the case, why are you planning to upgrade an older 2020 Carbon 29 frame that has a steeper head tube angle?

  2. Rocco R on April 30, 2023 at 7:27 am

I think wolf tooth makes a headset that can change the angle. Im not sure if it would work with that headset design but would be worth looking into.

    Noooo 😭no new axum until 2024 😭

Nice work…looking forward to the Mod 29xc review.

  5. n8_vel on April 30, 2023 at 7:28 am

Why did they make headtube angle so steep? They put in a lot of work on the technical drawings so they should know the reason why it’s 71Β°. They should know a slacker headtube handles good on decents. I’ve had this same issue with my huffy that was trail rated but has a 72Β° headangle. I don’t want to get heated up over this I’m just wondering why they can’t make it a little slacker?

12:55 this shot is a giveaway that this is the same open mold as trifox. Very thick reliable carbon, but very poorly finished bearing surfaces and zero rnd into fatigue analysis of the carbon layup.
At $1700 USD it’s extreme, I swear the low end giant trance used to be $2200

I been looking forward to this video for years

eBay and Lexon frames. Kev Central

  9. Blade on April 30, 2023 at 7:30 am

If it had different color highlights on the frame instead of ugly a** green, I might consider purchasing one. I hate Green!

  10. Chris Gardner on April 30, 2023 at 7:31 am

The stigma is still there, you don’t want to admit it. Then again, you get paid to recommend them.

  11. Nascar is Awesome on April 30, 2023 at 7:32 am

That is a lot of info in the video. Personally, if I was to buy a cheap carbon bike, I would just buy a Chinese frame instead of a hyper that I would just strip all the parts and put my own.

FINALLY BEEN WAITING FOR THIS UPDATE!

A 20 minute darn video and you didn’t weigh it? That’s the whole point of carbon

Suggestion: when sharing spec sheets with us, don’t show them on screen, Youtube’s quality does not always show small print accurately, and it’s hard to read small numbers. May I suggest, upload the tech spec sheets to an image sharing site, and link them in the description?

  15. jdw 88 on April 30, 2023 at 7:33 am

You should also mention this is a tube in tube frame no wire pulling required they just slide right through perfectly

  16. Big Mike & Jim-LOYROS on April 30, 2023 at 7:33 am

Very interesting but, personally, will never trust a carbon fibre frame. Greetings from Greece Kev .

  17. michael brinks on April 30, 2023 at 7:38 am

I hope big box bikes keep improving. Mountain bike prices are a joke. I seen some $35 carbon fiber valve stem caps. πŸ˜‚ they’re soooooo much better quality than the plastic 50 cent ones. I can tell a big difference after switching to the carbon fiber ones. My wallet was lighter so I now go faster.

"I’ll take money from anyone, to say anything, about any bike"
I think you might want to rephrase that, it doesn’t sound good.

  23. L on April 30, 2023 at 7:44 am

Well I looked for the new bike and found it at $1,699.99 which isn’t exactly what you would call a budget bike.

  28. WILLIAM A STANTON on April 30, 2023 at 7:47 am

I went to my local bike shop the other day, and I was really shocked at what I saw. Other than some BMX bikes and one golden cycles geared road bike, all they had were really cheap Wal-Mart bikes that were old and dirty and rusty that they were charging 3 and 4 times the price of the new Wal-Mart bikes! So I can’t even begin to support my local bike shop at this time. Someone has to be really stupid to buy a used worn out crappy cheap Wal-Mart bike, when they can go to Wal-Mart and buy the same bike new, for a fourth of the cost of the bike shop! I think it’s pretty messed up when you can get a better bike at Wal-Mart than you can from the bike shop for a lot less!

  29. ICan'tGiveCredit on April 30, 2023 at 7:47 am

The fact that you can buy a brand-new 26" bike that has a carbon fiber frame is kind of amazing. I would not be surprised if Hyper is the last brand to do that.

  30. Alexander De Santis on April 30, 2023 at 7:47 am

They need to start coming with 12×148 thru-axle and get far, far away from qr

  32. Holeshot MX on April 30, 2023 at 7:53 am

I bought mine used and have built mine up to race xc. I have sram nx 12 speed drive train, a dropper post and a rockshox fork with lockout. I’m 270lb and this bike has held my weight without problems. With that said I snapped the frame on my Mongoose ledge x2.

I’m just thinking of Stargate and the technologies we may have gotten from other worlds to have all these products come together as one.

  34. madjh on April 30, 2023 at 7:54 am

It looks better finished than the Specialized S-works Fact 11 I own. The bottom bracket area is very low quality finish and it is original. The internal finish of the seat post is poor, like other chineese cheap carbon fibre seat post. The only difference is .. weight. It is very ligh weight and price … several times for something cheaply made.

  35. OugaBoogaShockwave on April 30, 2023 at 7:55 am

From my Many years with love of bikes this HAS to be 1 of the Best deals frame wise for upgrading.
I am surprised over & over on the level of quality you can get without spending a fortune. My guess is with about 1-2k MAX of additional $$$ this will be as stunning as ANY mid-high end bike, so i’ll finish off with saying bikes can be "well" priced without the name brand pricing MOST bikes we desire.
it’s a Good sign that biking can be more affordable & Still have a quality design. I just hope this Hyper series gets more in line with todays geometry………….if they sell this in Canada i’ll buy it & upgrade it to be my new winter salt warrior ! My ghost bike needs a break from winter. i had 2 specialized winter stump jumpers i sold off, i want to baby my ghost !

As someone who built their first open-mould carbon hardtail in 2014 and has raced that bike to this day (16k+ miles), I’m so happy to see videos like this. I’ve been a huge proponent of these reasonably priced, highly capable framesets. I love that this is available and these Hyper bikes are going to be exactly what I recommend to anybody who wants to follow in my footsteps but perhaps not risk the jungle that is AliExpress.

I laughed when you were reviewing the spec sheet on the redesigned frame. I recognize those dropouts instantly as they are the ones that have been used on these open-mould frames for nearly a decade now. And the geometry? Very standard at this point. Nearly matches identically with the frame I started with in 2014. And I know exactly which European manufacturers you’re referring to. You can overlay the geometry between these open-mould frames and some of the big manufacturers.

I appreciate everything you do with your channel. Keep up the good work.

  37. jdw 88 on April 30, 2023 at 8:01 am

I put a 130mm rockshox on the front and a 27.5 wheel on the back and it’s now around 67 or 66 degree headtube angle

  38. wigzzborz on April 30, 2023 at 8:02 am

Man . . .I can hear you talk for hours. Great video btw, pleas dont abandon the ledge x2 build. I understand if you do, its the same bike as the x1.

  39. BadgerPrinting on April 30, 2023 at 8:03 am

Did you happen to see the new ozark trail.27.5? Looks like a decent bike as well if you are looking for a bike to review!

  40. DraX on April 30, 2023 at 8:03 am

Headtube length usually differ with frame size in order to have different stack height.

  41. Hemant Radhakrishnan on April 30, 2023 at 8:07 am

Hey! I’ve started watching your channel recently, and I see you review some budget mountain bikes on this channel. I would love to see you review a Kent Northpoint.

  42. Cam Kelly on April 30, 2023 at 8:07 am

Did you find any classified documents inside the frame? …kidding. But I would buy a light-weight frame due to the need to carry it upstairs, living on the second floor, without going into detail, I’m not a ‘spring chicken’, but can ride a bike and know enough not to tear it up. Electric bikes are too heavy by my shoulders. Just saying, being light-weight has other implications than just winning some race.

  43. Anthony charles on April 30, 2023 at 8:07 am

I think it was hambini that said companies like canyon orbea etc are just a few that have their frames manufactured in a factory over there, then charge a fortune for the privilege.

  44. OugaBoogaShockwave on April 30, 2023 at 8:13 am

i am really surprised with how well priced these "cheaply" priced carbon frames are becoming. I have a 2017 Ghost Lector & this Hyper Carbon X 29 is a steal of a deal. it Also looks good & not like in the past where cheap bikes LOOKED obviously cheap.
swapping in some good parts is looking like a great idea these days. 1st thing i would do is go with SLX or XT hydraulic brakes. hydraulic vs mechanical is such a HUGE difference & it doesn’t cost a lot more.

  45. Phillip Cowen on April 30, 2023 at 8:16 am

I would love to see videos where you are interviewing people from the budget frame makers… Mongoose, Schwinn, Hyper, etc. and see what they are doing to be competitive and innovative compared to LBS designers.

  46. Charles Lathan on April 30, 2023 at 8:18 am

Kev I liked the old carbon 29 but didn’t like the tube angle so a decided not to go for it. Now on the other hand I really like the looks of the 29 mod but I cannot find it on the site. Is this by design meaning we cant get it till the stock of the old runs out or do you have a link you can get for us?

  47. Keith Christner on April 30, 2023 at 8:20 am

The only modern geo that Walmart bikes are lacking are 15mm and 12mm through axles.

  48. Augusto Rallo on April 30, 2023 at 8:21 am
