Bike Helmets for City Cycling

Bike Helmets for City Cycling

People don’t plan bike accidents; that’s why they’re called “accidents.” For the best odds of surviving a crash on your bike, you’re going to need a helmet. But with so many helmets, which ones suit your needs for protection, ventilation, and style? Find out in this episode of 3-Minute Thursday.

The helmet I’ve been wearing for the past year. So far, it’s been comfortable with plenty of air flow and adjustability. The main reason I use this particular helmet is because I needed one, and they gave it to me for free, but I’m happy with it so far. I cannot attest to whether it’ll actually save my life since I’ve never had a serious bike crash *knocks on wood*. It has good Amazon reviews for what it’s worth.

For those of us that ride when it’s -10C and snow outside, a skiing helmet is actually a good option. It’s warm, has no vents and covers your ears, keeping them warm too. 😁

  2. Kyle Hagerty on August 4, 2022 at 12:31 am

do you find that wearing a cap makes you more sweaty? (I’ve never owned a cap)

  3. Tristan Laing on August 4, 2022 at 12:32 am

I learned a lot from this video. Even though I’ve been riding bikes my whole life, I didn’t know the basic different categories of helmets. I have a fairly large head, and so usually my experience with trying to wear a helmet is one of frustration and pain. Also, I really love the feeling of the wind in my hair, so tbh I very rarely wear a helmet. I find them finicky, painful, and yeah – "dorky". I really appreciate that you name aesthetics in this video as a significant motivational category, rather than the more typical approach I hear "what do you care what you look like, don’t you want to protect yourself". Of course, there are a lot of aspects to this conversation that you don’t even mention – the role of culture and infrastructure in bike safety, the different kinds of riding we engage in and how that relates to risk, even the data that suggests drivers tend to give less road space to cyclists wearing helmets. The shot you have in the video of a cyclist not wearing a helmet, the cyclist is literally on a cycle path or multi-use path, not the kind of area where I would think it’s very important to wear a helmet. Of course, I don’t know how the cyclist got here, or where they’re going next, could be areas where cycling is deeply risky.

This video has motivated me to think more about what kind of helmet I would actually wear, what kind of helmet I might not find "dorky", and to try on some helmets that actually fit me.

    Very informative 👍🏻👍🏻

  6. Robert Myers on August 4, 2022 at 12:37 am

Giro Isode no cap. Saw Zach’s recommendation for a inexpensive Giro — no longer easily available. Got least expensive easily available MIPS.

  7. Patrick Brown on August 4, 2022 at 12:39 am

    Protec skateboard helmet🤣

  8. Roaming Wolfpack on August 4, 2022 at 12:39 am

    Take Mom helmet shopping!

  9. tom lyons on August 4, 2022 at 12:42 am

I have cycled londons streets and beyond for nearly sixty years, no helmet, no lycra, no health and safety crap, I’m still cycling without all that health and safety crap, – @ – tom, crystal palace…

  10. pw510577w on August 4, 2022 at 12:42 am

Helmets, also known colloquially as "brain buckets".

  11. Bebo on August 4, 2022 at 12:43 am

Helmets make more sense for cars than they do bikes. I’ve never worn a helmet and I’m fine. If a car hits you at 30mph you are dead no matter what. No one in Europe wears bike helmets, only Americans do because our insurance companies wanted something to deny cyclists money with in case they get hit by a car. Same thing as jaywalking laws, scam to put blame on the weaker road user.

  12. Conor Richard on August 4, 2022 at 12:45 am

This dude is still saying if you ride fixed gear ⚙️ then you’re a hipster. Nah man if you’re riding fixed gear it’s been 10+ years since the single speed was trendy. They’re riding gravel bikes now 😂

  13. DeadManSitting on August 4, 2022 at 12:45 am

I never wear a helmet, or a hat, or a hood, it would be a sin to deny the world 24/7 acces to these luscious curls
Also my forehead is really sharp so if I crash I’ll go straight through whatever i’m colliding with no harm no foul

  14. davetbassbos on August 4, 2022 at 12:46 am

I work in a professional environment and I do need to have neat looking hair when I get to work, I’ve not been able to really find a completely satisfactory solution in the helmet space, does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

  15. Joshua Bourdrez on August 4, 2022 at 12:48 am

Hi Zach. Can you make a 3 min video on your most important commuting habits? How to navigate the urban zone on a bike rolling down a sinuous river of cars. When it’s safe to run a red, how to make your rights of the road known. When the sidewalk riding might be acceptable. What have you. Thanks.

  16. Conor on August 4, 2022 at 12:48 am

Just got a Lazer Blade with the MIPs

  18. gorn on August 4, 2022 at 12:49 am

  19. Jed Sblz on August 4, 2022 at 12:49 am

Love my Giro Savants….but, I look too dorky with a cap. I use Buffs.

  22. T BZ on August 4, 2022 at 12:52 am

It’s always best to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

  23. Derek Mosher on August 4, 2022 at 12:53 am

I been wearing helmets while riding for 30 years , I mean it`s just the right thing to do . I`m actually shopping for a new helmet now and looking for the right look and fit , there are so many choices these days .

  24. E M on August 4, 2022 at 12:53 am

Nothing about aero helmets for track bikes? I see some prejudice here!

  25. don goff on August 4, 2022 at 12:55 am

I call riders without a helmet on, organ donors.

  27. Noodl on August 4, 2022 at 12:58 am

Since i ride both fixed gear and mtb i got myself a poc kortal mips. Whenever i ride my fixed gear i just remove the visor so that it looks more slim. I also use an angi crash sensor whenever i ride alone.

  28. Katxu-CODM on August 4, 2022 at 12:58 am

Are you filipino? Muka kang pinoy eh 😆

  29. reallyevilric on August 4, 2022 at 12:59 am

Promotes helmets, but rides brakeless…? Feelings over logic, yeah?

Stay safe, Zach. Just happy to see you make videos.

  30. Fisher Fish on August 4, 2022 at 1:01 am

Just picked up a pricier POC helmet and I am in love. I used to only ride cheaper, less comfortable helmets, this new one is a significant upgrade. My advice for new riders is to start cheap, and go from there

  31. Jedidiah Bertram on August 4, 2022 at 1:02 am

This is a true story: I never wore my helmet. The first day I decided to wear my helmet while I was commuting, I got hit by a car.

I’ve never not worn a helmet since.

Wear a helmet. I just got lucky.

  32. Paul Lacey on August 4, 2022 at 1:03 am

A friend of mine fell off mountain biking, bashed his helmet on rocks, and it was very damaged….I never forgot the lesson….

  33. Diggnuts on August 4, 2022 at 1:04 am

Just get a normal bike if you want to commute. You don’t need a helmet for a proper upright commuter bike at all.

  34. Vinny on August 4, 2022 at 1:06 am

2:47 And you last video was about riding through red lights, pretty hypocrite.

  35. Gnarlez on August 4, 2022 at 1:06 am

I knew Jake Phelps from the age on 10 till his passing. When I started riding bikes and bought my first helmet he said to me "20 dollar helmet 20 dollar head". Any of my homies that start riding have to hear that from me now.

  36. Miranda Foster - Lugo on August 4, 2022 at 1:07 am

100% agree! I slammed my noggin on the concrete while riding to work one morning THANK GOD I was wearing a helmet cuz no doubt I would of needed a ride in an ambulance. my helmet was cracked and I walked into work like Nothing happened (though my body was hurting lol) had to buy a new one so I invested into a smith helmet because I agree, if you hate how it looks you probably won’t wear it.

  37. SKI FREE on August 4, 2022 at 1:08 am

Wearing a helmet means I’d let a car hit me so I can’t

  38. Beofux on August 4, 2022 at 1:08 am

Still want to see a bike fit for track frames at 3-Minute Thursday,🤓

  39. Daniel Ruezga on August 4, 2022 at 1:09 am

You forgot to mention full face helmets, hehe.

  40. Tyler W on August 4, 2022 at 1:10 am

I have that exact Bern in red

  41. Event 42 on August 4, 2022 at 1:11 am

Cycling caps are from days before helmets. I’d wear one on very cold day, whem slim beany isn’t enough to protect head from chilly air. Cap under helmet anytime except this conditions must be just for style and make me sweating like a dog when pedaling. I guess cap under helmet is some of those obscure cycling rules I don’t care to follow – to me comfort is > style.

  42. Sayla Degeeter on August 4, 2022 at 1:12 am

    Don’t forget about mips technology

  43. Suh Dud on August 4, 2022 at 1:15 am

Its either Mips or no bueno!
Have some of that protection for your protection.

  44. Johnny Silverhand on August 4, 2022 at 1:17 am

What about the king of helmets. The TT helmet. I’m only half being serious but I personally think they look awesome. Nobody else does though…

  45. AEtherDrake136 on August 4, 2022 at 1:18 am

I broke my back in a car accident and I hit my head on the curb right after (the car fractured my lower back) I hit the curb head on and it split my helmet in half. Anyway haven’t worn a helmet since but hey we keep doing sketch shit regardless plus the wind feels nice on my hair/head.

  46. wrenne d'angleterre on August 4, 2022 at 1:25 am

Great vid and good to see YouTubers promoting helmets. How about a video on group ride etiquette? I’d like to go to a group but I worried I don’t know the rules! Can fixed gear riders join roadies as well?

  47. Gio Dezera on August 4, 2022 at 1:26 am

I wear a full face motorcycle helmet. Jk.

  48. Marks Google on August 4, 2022 at 1:27 am
