Bicycle Equipment : How to Choose a Rear Derailleur on Mountain Bikes
In order to choose the correct derailleur for a mountain bike or road bike, it’s important to choose a cage length based on the gear range. Find out why a medium cage is a good choice for a rear derailleur with help from the owner of a bike company in this free video on rear derailleurs for mountain bikes.

Great vid. Medium it is
Very helpful.
Thanks. Concise and to the point. Good video. Told me what I needed to know.
Rear mechs have capacity limits, IE what ring size starts hitting the chain and upper jockey. On a Shimano SS (short cage) that happens at 27t. You want the chain to be 6mm from the teeth on the largest cog when in that gear. B tension screw helps fine tune that, but is no substitute for correct mech choice.
Many mechanics could rant on about the math in relation to chainring size and deduction, but in simple terms the capacity has to be higher than your largest rear sprocket. Medium cage was fine for 11-28 to 11-30 cassettes on a compact chainset, 11-36 you would be looking at long cage.
thank you so much for your explanation. I was searching for a few days. trying to get this explanation.
a 28 or 32 would be better on a mountain bike. your thinking road bike.
