7 Speed To 10 Speed Drive Train Upgrade – DIY Cyclocross/Gravel Bike Project

I show the process of upgrading my homebrew cyclocross bike from a 7 speed drive train, up to a 10 speed drive train. I replaced the cassette, rear derailleur, chain, and shifters along with new cables.

My only question is wouldn’t you also have to replace the front derailleur too?

  2. NICK DUFFY on June 27, 2019 at 8:31 pm

RJ great job. I’m spending too much on buying individual packs of brake and shifter cable kits. Could you recommend where I can buy it in bulk. I noticed you had a box on the floor with housing in one of your videos. Please help. Thank you.

LH brake lever for front brake? Is that the common practice?

The quick link tool is not a wrench, it’s a type of pliers.

  7. gab datugan on June 27, 2019 at 8:34 pm

you can bear with the bike

  8. The Beard Dream on June 27, 2019 at 8:34 pm

  11. Jerry Osin on June 27, 2019 at 8:37 pm

You’ve made a smile on my face thanks to these shoes. Congrats.

  12. earlyreefer on June 27, 2019 at 8:38 pm

curious why you didn’t grease the brake or shifter cables before inserting them into their housing?

  13. Jose Cornejo on June 27, 2019 at 8:38 pm

Hey RJ what size wheels are those? and what is the name?

  14. PAPA PANDA on June 27, 2019 at 8:39 pm

    Wow beautiful sleeper

  15. Cort Reagan on June 27, 2019 at 8:40 pm

When converting to a larger cassette, did you have to take the seat stay width into account. I have an old 87 Centurion that I want to upgrade from 8 to 9 or 10 speed.

  16. LEB Tuber on June 27, 2019 at 8:46 pm

Bro I do have a 7 gear trek marlin 4 / when I removed the cassettes there was no spacer/what can I do to upgrade the bike to 10 gears

  17. Mister Marc on June 27, 2019 at 8:49 pm

    I like your shoes 😉

  18. henrybikeman on June 27, 2019 at 8:51 pm

Didn’t need to change the dereailleur. Shift ratio in derailleur is the same. Indexing is in the shifter.

  19. hkgreat48 on June 27, 2019 at 8:53 pm

what happens if you over tightened the 10 speed cassette

  20. iftikhar khan on June 27, 2019 at 8:53 pm

You can also squeeze the chain link with your fingers on the sides of the chain link and press them together, if you do not have special pliers.

Rj, Do I NEED a new shift cable to complete this swap? I will definitely replace it, but can I get away with using the cable I have installed now just to get down the road?

  26. Gabriel Miqueias on June 27, 2019 at 9:02 pm

    Thumbs up for bear feet

  27. Luke on June 27, 2019 at 9:04 pm

Would 34-28 be the same gear ratio on a 7 speed freeweel and on a 10 speed cassette? Like equally as hard to push on a hill.

  28. nolatux on June 27, 2019 at 9:04 pm

Curious as to why you opted not to go with a spoke protector for this build *confused*

  29. jackie jin on June 27, 2019 at 9:06 pm

You drank a shit load of Pepsi in two weeks

  33. bigpun2k6 on June 27, 2019 at 9:10 pm

im confused. isnt this a vintage frame? dont you have to cold set or expand the steel frame somehow before upgrading to 10 speed? Or is this the 5 speed frame and you already expanded the rear part of the drops on the frame? I remember you having a raleigh you upgraded but perhaps this one is different.

  34. iftikhar khan on June 27, 2019 at 9:16 pm

  40. 94Kern on June 27, 2019 at 9:20 pm

    Hey RJ! Nice video, man!
I have a Trek 750 that I just bought and what a surprise when I found your video in my search for turning a 7s to 10s. Now you made my life much easier!
I’m curious about the stem though! How did you managed to turn it to ahead set?
    Cheers from Brasil!

Goodevening Mr. Bike Guy. Is it possible for me to upgrade my claris r2000 groupset to tiagra 4700 10 speed without replacing my current r2000 crankset? I was planning to buy the tiagra set without the cranks so that i can have money to spare for me to buy a cyclocomputer.

  42. T Mayberry on June 27, 2019 at 9:21 pm

Did you have to change the chainrings as well

  47. Rasmus on June 27, 2019 at 9:26 pm

Why do you remove both shifters if you only change the cassette, not the chainrings? For consistency?

  48. M A X on June 27, 2019 at 9:27 pm
