Perspective…viewing this solely as a mountain biker I couldn’t help but think that in large part the joy of riding a bike comes from encountering obstacles (rocks, roots, drops, skinnies, etc.). No disrespect to road cycling intended, rather just giving the mindset of a mountain biker.

  2. Len Wittrock on April 4, 2023 at 7:26 am

    I practice bunny hops

  3. Jedi’s Dad on April 4, 2023 at 7:26 am

I switch between MTB and Road weekly! The MTB teaches a lot of skills

  4. tobortine on April 4, 2023 at 7:28 am

Chris, lose the helmet and the beard when you’re talking to camera, you’re a good looking lad and you don’t need either of them.

  5. Michael Marzolf on April 4, 2023 at 7:32 am

    *decrease reaction time

  6. Robert Coates on April 4, 2023 at 7:32 am

If you want to get really good at bike handling, get a BMX and mess around with it.

  7. Thomas Parente on April 4, 2023 at 7:34 am

I see the value of learning to bunny hop, however, I’m concerned if there is excessive wear on the headset components.

  8. Random Scene on April 4, 2023 at 7:34 am

and next put the GMBN and EMBN on lycras and have an epic mixed surface ride on CX bikes. am already grinning thinking about steve jones and henry on lycras hahaha

  9. JSN KLSR on April 4, 2023 at 7:37 am

Nice video. I also realized the limits of my slick tyres… but it was more the limits of riding uphill muddy roads… or was it sliding downwards? 🤔

Also, what is up with all the people in the comment section talking about beards?
All I saw was a handsome man, freezing on the bench 😄

  10. elena i on April 4, 2023 at 7:38 am

    OMG Chris with a beard!!

  11. Thomas Winkler on April 4, 2023 at 7:38 am

    that boy looks freezing…

  12. 01FozzyS on April 4, 2023 at 7:38 am

Who’s the new bearded presenter? What happened to Travolta? lol

  13. D. Malafronte on April 4, 2023 at 7:38 am

Drop the beard buddie..makes you look like a large gnome….best looking GCN presenter to worst looking… so sad!!!

  14. Jon Williams on April 4, 2023 at 7:39 am

Learnt a lot from this, very impressive given Chris is sitting on a bench for most of this. Really impressive coaching tips. 👍

  15. Tiberius Moon on April 4, 2023 at 7:39 am

I would like to know how they keep their bikes clean without mudguards but the tyres are muddy. . . . .

  16. Colin Thompson on April 4, 2023 at 7:42 am

Mucking about on a cross bike is great for skills, confidence and just plain mega fun 👍

  17. Tetsuclaw on April 4, 2023 at 7:43 am

Fat bikes are really fun to ride in challenging conditions. Lets just say I am in Canada and I do not like putting my bike away in the winter. I also just got a brand new norco bigfoot bike too. Fat bikes just are really fun to ride and you feel like you can ride through just about anything.

  18. harvey lee on April 4, 2023 at 7:43 am

Wish I’d watched this before yesterday. I was heading for a bridge over the canal at some speed (faster than normal for me for me due to feeling unusually sprightly and a following wind) and "zoomed" up the ramp to where concrete met slippery decking. I hit the ground so hard I actually screamed! 4 hours in A+E and 6 stitches.

  19. Fiona Hunt on April 4, 2023 at 7:44 am

I enjoyed a half-day womens only MTB course a few years ago. Didn’t take to mountain biking but it really improved my bike handling skills on the road, and my confidence.

  20. Rich A W on April 4, 2023 at 7:48 am

Superb advice Chris.. dogging the "Revenant" beard too 🧔🏻

  21. Sheila stallard on April 4, 2023 at 7:49 am

My husband tried to avoid a object in the road…….a motorist…….who put him in hospital and wrecked his best bike

Tire pressure–learning when to let some out, to maximize contact patch.

  24. Dave Young on April 4, 2023 at 7:52 am

Great video Chris, not all watchers or members of the site are experienced cyclists and this short informative video can help those not so. You’ve just got to read some of the questions on the GCN Facebook page to realise not everyone is Geraint Thomas or Tom Pidcock 🙂

  25. Pierre Arnaud Le Magnan on April 4, 2023 at 7:54 am

    Good Video !

  26. Christian M Pugh on April 4, 2023 at 7:55 am

How can this be disliked already? you haven’t even had time to watch it in full -_-

Please tell us how to deal with stray dogs. 🐕 🐕🐕

  28. Vaibhav Tipnis on April 4, 2023 at 7:59 am

Hey GCN, you should make a video about "counter-steering" technique. I’m surprised you haven’t already made a video about the physics of bicycle steering dynamics. Most cyclists don’t know the physics of how bicycle steering works and how the mechanism is highly counter-intuitive.
Understanding the mechanism will greatly help people in obstacle avoidance and other emergency situations!
Certainly helped me improve my cornering response when I started reading up about it as a young physics nerd.

  29. Global Cycling Network on April 4, 2023 at 8:00 am

Which off road skills do you practise if any on your road bike?

  30. Cmac on April 4, 2023 at 8:02 am

Bunny hops on a road bike are much less forgiving than mtn bike. Keep bars dead straight.

  31. Acousticmarine on April 4, 2023 at 8:02 am

Faster again. What is with you Brits and the fascination with always getting faster. It’s like the muscle heads at the gym who are never strong or big enough. Very few people ride to go faster, they ride to get outdoors and have fun.

  32. Len Wittrock on April 4, 2023 at 8:02 am

    Great video!

  34. Battlefield Slayer on April 4, 2023 at 8:04 am

I go mountain biking during winter and when the roads get icy it helps I think 🤔🤔

  35. Dennis Vessey on April 4, 2023 at 8:04 am

I wonder what the aerodynamic drag of that beard is

  36. Bruno Cerri on April 4, 2023 at 8:08 am

Chris looks so cold sitting on the bench.

Edit: should’ve watched JPows’ video from last week

  37. John Macaulay on April 4, 2023 at 8:10 am

    Time for a shave

  38. Carl Inman on April 4, 2023 at 8:11 am

Wow Mr. Opie has some excellent bike handling skills!

  39. matt grady on April 4, 2023 at 8:11 am

I definitely love videos like this. There is too much power increase, do intervals blahs blahs blahs kind of videos. Its important to have those, but after a while it is hitting your head against the wall on how to be a better cyclist. This video helps encourage diverse training and riding! Thank you!

  40. Christian M Pugh on April 4, 2023 at 8:14 am

First like and comment!!! man I’m sad!

  41. 19redmiata94 on April 4, 2023 at 8:16 am

I practice these skills on all my bikes as I only have off road bikes.
